NatHERS ratings · Home Energy Rating

Star ratings, in-house.

Ratings for most homes within one business day of complete plans, from Australia’s largest team of in-house NatHERS accredited assessors, with the building physics behind everything we do. And if 7 stars means a costly upgrade list, we can test the other routes under the same roof.

A rating, and the advice behind it.

  1. Your NatHERS rating and certificatePrepared in accredited NatHERS software by our accredited assessors, ready for your building permit.
  2. Advice to reach the targetWhere a design falls short, the changes that move the result most, not just the first ones that work.
  3. Whole of Home ratingsThe NatHERS Whole of Home rating for the NCC’s energy-usage requirement, H6P2: the home’s main appliances, such as heating, cooling and hot water, rated together with any solar.
  4. Re-ratings when the design changesWe re-run the rating and reissue the certificate for a reassessment fee, and tell you what moved, and why.
  5. A route check if the upgrades biteIf reaching 7 stars means a long upgrade list, we compare the Performance Solution route in-house.

The largest in-house team. One standard.

Volume doesn’t have to mean shortcuts. Every rating is prepared by an accredited assessor on our own staff, with the same standard and the same building physics we bring to Performance Solutions and research for industry.

In-house

Accredited, on staff

Our assessors are accredited with Design Matters National, and they’re Thermarate staff, not contractors. Your rating isn’t passed down a chain, which is how most come back within one business day.

Physics

Advice that moves the result

Our assessors work alongside our building physicists, so design advice comes from how the house actually behaves.

Every route

No reason to push one

NatHERS, the elemental provisions and H6V2, all in-house. We recommend the route that suits the design.

    Send your plans

Plans, elevations, specification and location. We confirm the fee, and start when you go ahead.

  2. 02

    Rating and advice

Our accredited assessors rate the design and, where it falls short, show which changes move it most. Most homes are done within one business day of complete plans.

  3. 03

    Certificate

Your NatHERS certificate for the building permit, and a re-rating, for a reassessment fee, if the design changes.

  4. 04

    Pathway Check

If the upgrade list is long, we compare the Performance Solution route before anything is specified.

Straight answers on star ratings.

What does a star rating actually measure?

A modelled estimate of the heating and cooling a home’s design would need, per square metre, under standard assumptions about how it is used. It isn’t a meter reading or a check of how the house was built. More in What’s in a star?

How quickly will I have my rating?

For most homes, within one business day of receiving a complete set of plans and specification. Larger and multi-unit projects take a little longer, and we confirm the timing when we quote. If anything is missing, we tell you what we need.

Is 7 stars the gold standard?

No. Seven stars is the minimum the NatHERS route accepts for most new homes in most states, and lower in climate zones 1 and 2 with a qualifying outdoor living area. The ABCB says all compliance options aim to offer an equivalent level of performance.

What if my design can’t reach 7 stars?

We’ll show you which changes move the rating most for the least cost, and whether a Performance Solution under H6V2 would meet the same requirement for less. Both are done in-house.

Do you rate existing homes?

Yes. Since 1 July 2026, NatHERS, now branded Home Energy Rating, rates existing homes as well as new designs. Our accredited assessors rate the home as it stands and show which upgrades are most cost-effective. More in Star ratings now cover existing homes

We’re switching from double brick. Will the rating change?

It can. A framed or brick-veneer wall usually insulates better but stores far less heat on the room side, and in Perth’s climate that mass often counts. Steel framing needs the right details, such as a thermal break or battens. We can rate your design in each wall system before you commit. See the wall lab

We already have an assessor. Can you still help?

Yes. Your assessor stays your assessor. Send us the one job where the upgrade list hurts, and we’ll check whether another route suits it better.
